Porticool II Nears Production

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – After several years of testing and development the Porticool II is planning the first production build early in October. All of the custom components that comprise the vest and control module have been given production approval and the long lead time components have been ordered.

The pre-production units have been demonstrated at several trade shows and onsite with specific customers since it’s unveiling at the American Society of Safety Engineers 2011 conference in June. When it is released for sale in October the Porticool II will be the “World’s lightest untethered active cooling garment” on the market; making it ideally suited for demanding applications where phase change, water cooled or portable heat pump solutions are not a viable option. Examples include HAZMAT, fire fighters, industrial (nuclear, welding, etc.) and military applications.

Porticos Founders Meet With Congressman David Price

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC— Founders of the engineering firm, Porticos Inc. met with U.S. Congressman David Price in September to discuss Porticos’ work for the Department of Homeland Security.  Porticos is developing a patented technology for the effective cooling of the human body in high stress applications, which is of high importance to the Department of Homeland Security.  Congressman Price and his staff met with Porticos representatives to learn more about the company’s efforts and to review their progress on the Homeland Security project.

Congressman Price represents the 4th district of North Carolina and serves as a member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.

Homeland Security Selects Small Businesses From 16 States For Second SBIR Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology division today announced that 31 small businesses, in 16 states, have been selected for contract negotiations.  These firms were chosen by the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA) from applicants to the Department’s second Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program solicitation in July 2004.  Participation in the HSARPA SBIR Program is restricted to for-profit small businesses in the United States with 500 or fewer employees, including all affiliated firms.

“I am pleased to announce this second set of awards with small businesses to develop innovative technology to help meet the Department’s mission to protect the homeland,” said Dr. Charles McQueary, Under Secretary, Science and Technology.  “We are already seeing excellent results from our first set of awards in March 2004 and I am confident that our SBIR program will make great research contributions.”

The 31 firms will receive a total of $3.1 million, with individual firms each receiving up to $100,000 for Phase I (up to six-months) in one of five technology areas.  In Phase I, they will define the scientific, technical and commercial merit of a particular concept.  Firms, whose concepts prove successful in Phase I, may be invited to apply for a two-year Phase II award not to exceed $750,000 to further develop the concept, usually to the prototype stage.
