Porticos Supports Panther Creek High School Moody’s Mega Math Challenge Team

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – Porticos was proud to be able to provide support in the way of facilities, supplies and food to a well deserving group of Panther Creek High School students who recently participated in the Moody’s Mega Math Challenge (M3 Challenge). The M3 Challenge is organized annually by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Winners receive scholarships totaling $115K for continuing education. This year more than 5400 high school students from 29 states participated in the competition that is intended to spotlight applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool.

The Panther Creek Team consisted of Sai Cheemalapati, Holland Gallagher, Peter Green, Steven Hee and Hunter Patterson. This year’s M3 Challenge focused on the question “Is US High-Speed Rail worth the cost?” With the elimination of continued funding for the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (HSIPR) by Congress last November, answering the question is critical to getting private investment to fund the project.

Using applied mathematics and in-depth research, the team developed mathematical models to address ridership, construction & maintenance costs and the impact on energy dependency in ten HSIPR identified regions. The 19 page final report was impressive in its detail and complexity especially considering the team only had 14 hours from the release of the problem statement to the report submission. While we are not at liberty to release the findings until the competition awards are announced, one fact was mathematically proven; pizza goodness is directly related to the amount of pepperoni applied.

Help Porticos Fight Hunger in NC

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – Porticos is teaming up with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to help fight hunger, and we need your help. Did you know that in the 34 counties served by the non-profit organization more than 500,000 people are at risk of hunger with nearly 34% of those being children? And that the Food Bank distributed over 41.5 million pounds of food in 2009-2010 alone!

Porticos employees have started a collection drive in the office and are planning a company volunteer event at the NC Food Bank warehouse in Raleigh on April 25th. “I am excited to support a worthy cause like the Food Bank and proud to be a part of a company that is interested in giving back to the community” explained Porticos engineer Luda West who is leading the volunteer effort. “The active season for storms, tornadoes and hurricanes in NC is approaching and we all need to be prepared.”

In addition to the in-office drive, Porticos has a virtual food drive website setup so that our friends, customers and suppliers can be part of the action. To donate simply go to the link www.foodbankcenc.org using your Internet Explorer or Firefox web browser and follow the instructions to either donate a direct amount or virtually “shop” for items to donate.

The timing of our food drive is perfectly arranged with the Million Dollar Challenge from The Feinstein Foundation. For every dollar or pound of food that we collect at Porticos during the next two months, the Food Bank will receive 1-1 match from The Feinstein Foundation’s Million Dollar Grant. We sincerely hope that you will take a moment to go to the virtual food drive website and make a contribution for a great cause. Thank you.

Porticos Reaches Resource Milestone

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – Porticos has quietly reached a milestone that has been years in the making. The company can now boast a team of 20 engineers, contractors, and support staff, a substantial achievement that is even more extraordinary in these times of economic uncertainty.

This growth (35% in 2011 alone) can be attributed largely to careful planning and focusing in five critical markets:

  • Consumer Products – most notably cell phones and laptop computers
  • Industrial Products – ranging from bar code scanners to industrial test equipment
  • Military Products – including military radios and the Porticool II cooling vest
  • Energy Systems – hybrid solar devices and the Department of Energy residential clothes dryer
  • Medical Products – focused primarily on patient-worn wireless devices and animal / veterinary products.

Porticos has a reputation for designing high-quality handheld wireless devices, due largely to the fact that the Porticos founders and many of the first engineers came from the cell phone industry. Our continued growth allows Porticos to add engineers from leading companies focused on machine design, medical product design, and drug delivery systems, among other specializations. This diversification in resource background and experience allows Porticos customers to improve their products by tapping into a broad, multi-market knowledge base, taking advantage of an opportunity that few other firms can offer.

In the future, Porticos will continue to build a reputation for excellence and awareness in the medical and energy system market segments while staffing growth responsibly, avoiding the common pitfalls that can affect larger organizations.
