Big Picture to Small Details: Design and Manufacturing Engineering Consultants

Once the path has been selected and the big questions answered, the next step is to design a great product. It’s right there in our tag-line: “We turn good ideas into great products.”

Appearance

How a device looks and feels is just as important as how it behaves and performs. This is a subjective area, so Porticos provides options. When requested, we can supply photo-realistic renderings and physical samples of many different form-factors. These are typical used to solicit opinions from stakeholders or focus groups.

Architecture

Design Engineering starts with defining strategies to achieve and optimize the desired appearance, behavior, and performance while maintaining feasibility in system engineering.

  • Communication protocols.
  • Robustness strategies.
  • Electronic functional blocks.
  • Mechanical subassemblies.
  • Coding flowcharts.
  • Regulatory compliance.

Detailed Design

Mechanical, hardware, and firmware engineers roll up their sleeves and get to work! Custom circuit-boards, firmware, and mechanics are defined using Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages. Our proprietary development process, and our broad experience in the field, make Porticos remarkably efficient at this task.

Demonstration

Porticos likes to provide physical demonstrations of our progress towards product realization. Sometimes that’s a “breadboard” prototype to show off the electronics. Other times it is a non-functional but aesthetically beautiful mock-up that shows how the parts go together. Porticos engineers will do this upon request to support our clients needs. But we’ll also do it internally as a “reality check” to ensure that everything is working just as intended.

Flexibility

The process is tuned a bit differently for every project. Porticos works closely with our clients to determine where and how we can coordinate with in-house technical expertise. We are comfortable accepting a hand-off from a previous phase, or providing a hand-off to a later phase. Of course, Porticos shines most brightly when we drive the process from inception to conclusion. Some important tasks and milestones include:

  • Research & Benchmarking
  • Identify & Classify Technical Risk(s)
  • DFM / DFA
  • Design Review
  • DFMEA
  • Product Validation
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • First Article Inspection
  • Tooling Approval
