Design for Manufacturing is primarily about consistency. We need confidence that 10,000 parts can be made almost identically, and can be assembled into 10,000 products with no need for modification or adjustment.
Design for Assembly focuses on eliminating assembly errors. Parts should go together in only one way. If assembly errors cannot be completely eliminated then they should at least be made obvious so that defective products never leave the factory.
In the end, both of these things are about cost. The cost of rework, repair, and warranty can be dramatically reduced with careful attention during Product Development.
