Background
Covelight (now Radware) came to Porticos for assistance in developing a rack-mount security router device.
Challenges
We started with an assessment of Covelight’s business goals: low volumes, high margin, and a tight schedule to launch. This was Covelight’s first product, so there was no “design language” to match.
Covelight’s management wanted their product to really stand out. A rack-mount device is typically stacked amongst other nondescript flat metal boxes. Only the front face is visible, so that’s where Porticos focused our attention, aiming to provide something elegant and eye-catching that would fit their schedule and budget.
The engineering team quickly settled on a formed sheet-metal solution, then set about generating photorealistic rendering of several approaches. We worked with Covelight to refine their favorite approach in CAD. Achieving that look required welding and grinding; easily achievable within schedule and budget constraints. We then fabricated several prototypes.
Outcomes
The result was a delighted client and a handsome product. Porticos keeps a model of the prototype in our showcase.
