Community Involvement

Porticos is proud to be a good corporate citizen of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and Golden, Colorado. We look forward to continuing our work with local charities and schools.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County

Porticos spent the day volunteering with “Build a Block” a division of Habitat for Humanity. The team donned hard hats and put their engineering skills to use, this time not for product design, but to help create affordable housing for North Carolina families.

CAARE (Community – Action – Advocacy – Restoration – Empowerment) offers practical, social, financial, psychological and emotional support to individuals and families (for over twenty years). Porticos volunteered and helped construct raised garden beds, a hoop greenhouse, build an ornamental pond, and updated the existing building to make it an inviting space for therapeutic activity and relaxation.

NC State

Porticos completed a year-long senior design sponsorship at North Carolina State University, challenging three students in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry, and Science (TECS) with a real-world project. Students studied the Porticool vest, a Porticos invention introduced at the American Society of Safety Engineers conference as the “World’s lightest untethered active cooling garment.” The students designed and tested improvements to conserve more of the vest’s cooling power while also exploring thermoelectric generators that could feed off of the vest’s vast temperature differences.

By sponsoring this project, Porticos supported a real-world, goal-based project, challenging students with the type of technical problems, commercialization processes, and product design challenges that Porticos engineers engage in every day.
