Enabling Wireless Connectivity for Existing Products
Isabella Products, Inc., is a next-generation consumer wireless products and services company. One of Isabella’s cornerstone products is a digital photo frame that connects wirelessly thru a 3G network to allow instant downloads of photos from a host server and automatic photo sharing among connected users (e.g., family members).
Realizing that many digital frames currently on the market lack the capacity for wireless connectivity, Isabella sought to develop a small USB device—dubbed the Mini—that could provide that connectivity and interface directly with existing devices.
Isabella reached out to Porticos and Connected Development for mechanical and electrical design respectively.
Designing Efficient Packaging While Maintaining Performance and Aesthetics
When designing miniature wireless devices, one of the key mechanical challenges is to ensure efficient packaging while also retaining antenna performance and aesthetics Porticos engineers worked closely with the hardware team to create preliminary layout concepts and wrap industrial design elements over the package. For the selected concept, Porticos
- Provided detail design for all mechanical components using Unigraphics
- Conducted FEA and tolerance analysis of snap features to ensure they would perform as expected.
Unique Design Considerations
The Isabella Mini featured a backlit button with capacitive touch. To fill the air gap and provide capacitive coupling to the board, Porticos specified a polyurethane gel material that would also act as a light diffuser for the board-mounted LEDs to backlight the button.
